Wearing patterns can be a bit tricky. But once you get the hang of it, dressing up becomes easier and more fun.
First, start selecting the right prints that flatter your figure. For instance, women with wide hips must avoid wearing verticals around the area. Those with small busts, meanwhile, can wear verticals and prints around the area for more emphasis.
The print sizes also matter. Large prints don’t flatter builds of small sizes (they overwhelm you) and even the plus sizes (they enlarge bodies even more). Medium sizes with minimalist designs are perfect.
Here are a few tips and tricks:
Establish commonality, either in color or design. Blending pieces that share similarities brings out harmony. Color is a compelling element. To avoid creating unnecessary busyness and instead fostering continuity, choose similar or matching color schemes.
Mind the scales. Mixing large prints with other large prints create asymmetry which looks unpleasant. However, if you opt for a mix of levels, i.e., large and small prints, the entire ensemble will appear well-coordinated. Another powerful trick is to wear muted or monochrome pieces like scarves and coats to balance out the prints. Wearing black, a classic color, is also great. Just remember black looks nicer and more sophisticated with darker prints than bright colors.
Mind your accessories. If you aren’t bold and confident enough to mix and match on your own, invest in accessories instead. You can pair statement necklaces, colorful scarves, and printed headbands. Another option is to buy ready-to-wear printed dresses. When you do so, make sure your bags and shoes are of solid colors.
